For individuals who have successfully kept bees for at least one year and want to rear their own queens for their apiaries. Students should leave the end of the session with one or two queen grafts from which to develop queens and a solid foundation for implementing the method in their own apiary. Matt Steward and Bob Wolff regularly enter their honey and other bee related products at the state fair, and regularly bring home ribbons. Learn about techniques and tips to transform your products from tasty to professional, prize winning entries. There are 20 categories an adult beekeeper can enter. If you would like to look up the categories before the class, visit: www.iowastatefair.org, “competition,” “categories/premium books,” “Apiary-bees/honey.” Early registration is July 14, so you’ll have time to put together your entries. The Nature Center is also carpooling entries from this area for class participants, if you are interested in entering but cannot take your entries and pick them back up yourself. Fee: $5/person. Pre-registration not required. Class will last approximately 2 hours.

If you would like to look up the categories before the class, visit: www.iowastatefair.org, “competition,” “categories/premium books,” “Apiary-bees/honey.” Early registration is July 14, so you’ll have time to put together your entries. The Nature Center is also carpooling entries from this area for class participants, if you are interested in entering but cannot take your entries and pick them back up yourself. Fee: $5/person. Pre-registration not required. Class will last approximately 2 hours.
