WHAT IS THE INDIAN CREEK NATURE CENTER?

WHAT THE NATURE CENTER DOES

Environmental Education: Today’s children spend more time in front of a television than in school. Their minimal contact with nature is a concern for both parents and educators. Through an active program of environmental education, the Nature Center introduces our natural heritage to thousands of children.

Nature Center field trips provide environmental education to area students. Many scout groups, preschools and others visit to learn. The Nature Center has an ongoing education program for education for families and individuals of all ages.

Nature Preserve: The Nature Center manages a 240-acre preserve. The land has prairies, woodlands and wetlands. It has been designated an Urban Wildlife Sanctuary and a National Environmental Study Area. Two national recreation trails, the Sac and Fox and the Cedar Greenbelt, wind through the land. Visitors enjoy solitude, natural beauty and exercise.

Family Activities: Each year the Nature Center sponsors about 80 family activities. They are attended by thousands of people and range from wildflower walks to an annual Maple Syrup Festival, held the first full weekend in March.

Information: Nature Center staff answer about 2,000 calls per year from people seeking information about plants, wildlife, astronomy and geology.
