Amateur Photographers are invited to submit by July 15 their favorite 8 x 10" nature photo taken at Indian Creek Nature Center. Photos will be displayed in August. Reception for exhibit will be August 1, 7-8 pm.

* Survivor CampSurvivor Camp

Time: 9:00 am

Ages 8-11. Meets from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday, August 28 - Friday, August 1 Into the wild for five days of survival skills and fun! Create fire without matches, pick a campsite and build a shelter. Learn to harvest drinking water and find wild foods. Carve your own hiking stick, explore trails using map and compass skills, learn how to use GPS to navigate. Create your own camouflage and practice skills you need to have safe adventures away from home. Limited to 16 participants. COST: $155 Members; $185 Non-member. Online registration will be available after March 15.

Opening Reception for the Amateur photo exhibit. "Nature Center Scenes". Drop in to meet these talented photographers and view their photos of the Indian Creek Nature Center. Please call to register 362-0664. Free event. 7 - 8 pm in our second floor auditorium. .

* Mid-Summer’s Eve Labyrinth Mid-Summer’s Eve Labyrinth

Time: 7:30 pm

Mid-Summer’s Eve Appreciation Walk Friday, August 1, 7:30 p.m. Indian Creek Nature Center Nothing speaks Original Iowa more than the tall grass prairie. From the rich soils that developed over millennia today’s Iowans reap our harvest. Let us absorb the beauty of the diverse flora and fauna that call prairies home and give thanks for bounty. Join Marion Patterson, Veriditas Certified Labyrinth Facilitator and Kathy Davis of Illuminations, at the Prairie Labyrinth at Indian Creek Nature Center for a High Summer Labyrinth Walk. Dress for the weather. Apply repellent as needed. Bring a water bottle if desired. Park at the Lynch Wetland west of the prairie or park along on Otis Road at the trail entrance. Meet at the trail entrance (we will be waiting) Register on-line through Indian Creek Nature Center by noon August 1st. Fee: $5.00 teens and adults each.

Play predator/prey games and camouflage games to see how animals survive, hone your observation skills to discover animal tracks, trails and signs, and discover the mammals, birds, insects and reptiles that hide and hunt in woods and prairie. your "spy skills" as well as gaming skills will help you find the way. Limited to 12 participants. COST: $125 members; $145 Non-Member. Online registration will be available after March 15.

Time: 9:00 am

Enjoy a day of capturing nature using cameras, sketching, watercolors and clay. Build a simple loom to create a wall hanging. Enjoy creating while being outdoors. Create an exhibit of your work to share with parents at the end of the day. THIS CAMP IS FULL, no more registrations are being accepted.

Time: 7:00 pm

Join storyteller Darrin Crow and the Nature Center staff around the bonfire for stories of mischief and mayhem from the tricksters of the animal kingdom- Rabbit, Raven, Coyote, Fox, and more. Registration available soon online. Fees will apply.

* Grant Wood's Indian CreekGrant Wood's Indian Creek

Time: 6:30 pm

Enjoy a casual walk along the Sac and Fox Trail to find possible scenes depicted in Grant Wood’s paintings of Indian Creek. Match the scenes from the paintings to today’s Indian Creek landscape and hear stories of Grant Wood’s adventures along Rosedale Road. Walk is co-sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and Indian Creek Nature Center to celebrate both Grant Wood and International Art Appreciation Week. Registration is REQUIRED by Wed., August 6th through the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art by calling 366-7503 or online at ethomas@crma.org.

* Spelunking at Maquoketa CavesSpelunking at Maquoketa Caves

Time: 8:00 am

Ages 9 and older. Meets from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Monday, August 11. Meets at the Nature Center. Caves are cool, mysterious and a challenge to explore! Crawl underground to experience one of Iowa's fabulous natural wonders. Join our professional staff for adventure, a search for cave formations, lessons in geology and an overall great time. Limited to 12 participants with an 8 participant minimum. COST: $55 Members; $65 Non-Members. Online registration will be available after March 15.

Time: 9:00 am

Ages 6-8. Meets from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Tuesday, August 12. Explore the pond and Indian Creek to learn about fish, crawdaddies, frogs, dragon-flies and dozens more aquatic critters. We'll go fishing with poles to see just what is swimming in the pond. Limited to 10 children. COST $35 Members; $45 Non-Members. Online registration will be available after March 15th.

Time: 9:30 am

Ages 3,4,5 with parent or other adult. Meets from 9:30 - 10:30 am. Do you have a bird feeder in your backyard? Come do some bird watching at the Nature Center's bird blind, and learn a little more about what makes birds special. Learn what feathers are made of, what birds like to eat, and see how many different birds we can find. Limited to 14 children. COST: $6 Member child; $8 Non-Member child. Programs are for a child and parent or other adult. Register online after March 15, 2014.

Time: 9:00 am

Coffee and Chat. Each month on the second Thursday gather in the sunroom at Indian Creek Nature Center to enjoy coffee and conversation about the latest happenings at Indian Creek Nature Center. Enjoy a social time, and learn what’s happening in nature at that time, meet Nature Center staff and become better acquainted with our facilities, programs and trails. Free

Time: 9:00 am

Ages 6-9. Meets from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Thursday, August 14 Explore sandbars, riffles and quiet pools along Indian Creek. We'll make and use minnow traps, discover where the crayfish hide, and catch the small aquatic critters that fish eat! Be prepared to be wet and probably a bit muddy! Limited to 12 participants. COST: $35 member; $45 Non-Member. Online registration will be available after March 15.

Time: 9:30 am

* Perseid PartyPerseid Party

Time: 9:00 pm

This will be a great night to spend in good company learning about constellations, stars, planets, and watching for satellites and shooting stars! Clear skies will allow us to search for hidden gems above! Binoculars and telescopes will be available, but feel free to bring your own, along with a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Attendees will be eligible to enter to win a brand new pair of Alpen Shasta Ridge binoculars! If cloudy, we’ll go on a night hike. The Perseid meteor shower occurs from August 12-16th. During the peak (Aug. 12-13) this shower can produce up to 60 meteors an hour.

Saturday, August 16, 9:30 - 10:30 am. Ages 3-6. The woodland is a magical place! it's filled with paths to explore, and cool plants and animals. Ever wondered who lives in the woods? come with us to discover this amazing habitat and who lives there. Register online. Children: M $5; NM $6. Parents are free.

Now, before snow flies, is the time to place your feeders and prepare for winter bird watching enjoyment. Learn what feeders and bird seed best attract and help birds, how to avoid window collisions and other potential bird feeding problems, ways to provide water, and how to identify your feathered diners. Explore Our Trails

Photo of a woodland trail at Indian Creek Nature CenterRoughly four miles of trails wind through 210 acres of wetlands, riparian forests, maple sugarbush, tallgrass prairies and oak savannas at Indian Creek Nature Center. Nearby Vecny Woods has an additional 28 acres of massive hardwood trees stewarded by the Nature Center. Enjoy hiking, bird watching, cross-country skiing and fishing while you explore land in various stages of ecological restoration. Trails are open sunrise to sunset 365 days a year.

Rules of the Trails

Please help us in our mission by following our Rules of the Trail:

  • Keep horses, bicycles, weapons and motorized vehicles off of the property.
  • Keep pets on leashes, and remove feces deposited by your animals.
  • Leave plants and wildlife undisturbed.
  • Do not release animals or introduce plants onto the property.
  • Carry out your trash.

CAUTION! Poison ivy is abundant. It may cause an itchy rash on humans, but it is an important wildlife food source. Poison oak does not live in Iowa.
